Colorhouse tapped local designers, artists, and makers to transform an apartment in the Pearl District’s iconic Honeyman Hardware Lofts, turning a blank canvas, north-facing studio into an expression of creativity that our city is known for. MAKE THIS: Color Block technique using muted pastels to create unique spaces in your own home. Let’s get started!

You will need:

Level and Pencil
1 quart WATER .06
1 quart AIR .07
Painter’s tape
Paint brush
2 Paint rollers
Drop cloth

1. Use a level and pencil to draw straight lines for your color blocks. We went 5′ up from the floor for our horizontal height.

2. Tape along the pencil lines to create the color block shapes.

3. Seal the edge using the existing wall color. This will make sure you have absolutely PERFECT lines!

4. Begin cutting in with your first color block color.

5. Finish up with your roller. Spread that paint!

6. Grab a brush and cut in with your second color.

7. Roll to complete. You are almost done!!

8. Carefully pull off the tape….

9. …..voila! Look at those lines!

10. Time to style! A custom couch by Revive Upholstery & Design and accent chair by Revolution Design House carve out a warm and inviting living room in this studio’s open floor plan. Vintage Moroccan rugs from Kat + Maouche add pattern and texture to the unit’s original concrete floors and soften the towering exposed concrete pillar reminiscent of the buildings warehouse history. A live-edge coffee table from The Joinery adds an earthiness to the light-filled corner unit and a painting by graphic-artist-turned-painter Karen Wippich completes the look!

We applied the same color block technique on an opposite wall in this open loft space. See our Chief Color Nerd in action below.
